Come for the delicious refreshments and stay for an interactive volunteer orientation experience that will not only introduce you and your family to The Need2Read Program, Inc., but also to our Wednesday night youth literacy program offered to homeless children residing in the Family Promise shelter. Learn how not only adults, but children as young as 5 have volunteered with the organization to provide exciting, out-of-the-box, literacy fun to children ages 3-12 years old while also promoting a love of literacy in the community.

Find out how your child can get hands-on volunteer experience and earn community service hours. While there, be sure to meet some of our volunteers, Executive Board members, and high school members of the Need2Read Club at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High! But wait, there’s more, help us fill our Kindness Trees with words of kindness, inspiration, and encouragement by writing on leaves and birds that will cover the trees.

Bring a bag of candy, Valentine’s pencils, stickers, erasers, or other small toys and treats to fill Valentine’s baskets that will be delivered to each family that we serve in the shelter.

We look forward to seeing you ALL!!!

Bring your children of all ages to join in on the fun with The Need2Read Program, Inc.! Children will be inspired to develop an even greater appreciation for literacy and will be introduced to the topic of homelessness in a sensitive, respectful, and attention grabbing way that offers them an added opportunity to complete one of two service projects for a homeless or less fortunate family before they leave!

Old and young will hear the story of “Fly Away Home” and “The Old Man”, play an interactive large group game, fill up our Kindness Tree, make a Valentine’s basket for a homeless family in the shelter or create a reading nook for a less fortunate family which will be delivered to their home later in the day!

But wait! There’s more! Children of all ages will be able to select as many free books as they’d like to take home for themselves, a relative, or a friend! We will also have a few special character guests with us that will make for a great photo op experience! We can’t wait to see everyone there!

Please join us at one o’clock for a panel discussion by SPFHS students, moderated by SJM leaders at All Saints Episcopal Church, 559 Park Avenue in Scotch Plains.

Each of us carry several identities. These identities find their origin in many areas of our lives – race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, political inclinations, physical and cognitive abilities, even documentation status. These issues of identity can lead to considerable barriers to young people finding their voices and standing as individuals ready to be a part of the greater collective. Thus asking the question, “Who am I?” can lead to several different answers from each young person in our society. The influence of social media on self-identity and worth has taken considerable hold and it’s power cannot be ignored. The family, for centuries, has been the primary source of cultural identity and norms, yet these shifts have our young folks being accused of not being Black, Asian, Jewish, Latino enough. Labels we all assign to others as well as ourselves.

Come share your stories with us, as we begin the journey to explore implicit and explicit bias in our young people. Help us help them “Break the Labels”.

We will be packaging 10,000 meals in an assembly-line of highly nutritious dehydrated meals comprised of rice, soy, vegetables, and 23 essential vitamins and minerals. These packaged meals have been used primarily to support school feeding programs in developing countries. Hunger is the common thread among the world’s most challenging issues. Targeting hunger — specifically by supporting school feeding programs — leverages support to other causes including poverty, disease, education, and the welfare of women and children.

Donations will also be accepted to pay for the meals.
